Mary Rose museum opens in Portsmouth

The brand new Mary Rose museum which cost £35million will be opening to the public from this Friday 31st May at the Historical Dockyard in Portsmouth.

Mary Rose Museum

The Ship was discovered in 1971 and only raised from the seabed in 1982, but the latest museum now boasts recreations of areas of the ship mirrored alongside the actual wreck.

Around 500 men and boys were drowned when the Mary Rose sank, many of them drowned because of the netting that was used to stop boarding.

Since 1982 the hull has been constantly sprayed with wax to preserve it, but this stopped recently and it will now live in a "hot box" for 4 years drying out. however it can still be viewed through glass, and it gives it a perspective of size as you see people working on it.

If you need accommodation in Portsmouth then there are many splendid places to stay, and some great places to eat around Old Portsmouth. Its a great place for a family weekend, and you can tie it in to a visit to the Isle Of Wight.

Portsmouth Historical Dockyard is open 10-5pm and is open 7 days a week.
